The
film that really thrust Adam Sandler into the big time, and which casts
back into the Eighties to provide a nostalgic romantic comedy. Robbie Hart (Sandler) is a "wedding
singer", who entertains at wedding receptions etc, and when he
is left standing at the altar by his fiancee he plummets into deep depression.
He is revived by waitress Julia (Drew Barrymore), who is getting married
herself to a womanising yuppie named Glenn (Matthew Glave) and the more
time Julia and Robbie spend together, the closer they become, leading
to the inevitable happy ending. Don't get me wrong- this is quite
a funny movie, indeed there are some extremely funny parts, but essentially
the comedy is based on the cringe factor of Eighties fashion nightmares
and dodgy music. There is a sickly sweet predictability about
the plot and you can fairly easily guess each stage of the film, but
then it's not about taxing your senses this one. The acting is fairly okay- most of
the cast look as if they're doing it in their lunch hour, and are all
very laid back, Sandler and Barrymore especially. In conclusion, worth a watch
if you fancy zoning out for a bit, but not one to watch over and over-
not a lot of substance, really.DJY
