You know his number. You know his
name. And now, you will meet...his son.
After
you’ve seen a few of Adam Sandler films you kind of get used to him
and things stop being funny. I still think Happy
Gilmore is his best film. He co-wrote this film with his buddy Tim
Herilhy (who wrote 'The Wedding Singer’).
In this film Sandler adopts
a hunch, a whisper and together with a floppy hair-do assumes the role
of the son of Satan, Nicky; Satan is played by Harvey Keitel.
It has come to the end of ten
thousand years and one of Satans three sons are to be crowned on the
throne in hell but Satan announces that he will remain for the next
ten thousand years. This annoys his other two sons played by Rhys Ifans
and Tom Lister Jr. who decide to go and start their own hell on Earth.
The only one who can stop them is Nicky.
There was scope to have a lot
more jokes and comedy but I think too much focus was on Sandler as this
sheltered son of the devil. The set designs and costumes of hell were
good and some of the conceptual ideas were good but the film lacked
punch. It didn’t grab you, I know comedies aren’t meant to but some
do.
All in all a disappointing
comedy which had so much potential (and I didn’t even mention Tarantinos
cameo as a crazed priest, one of the funnier bits!) C.Y
