Trust Me
Jim
Carrey loses some of the manic energy he displayed in The Mask and Ace
Ventura, but still manages to turn in a good collection of rubber faces.
He plays unscrupulous lawyer, Fletcher
Reede, separated from his wife, Audrey (Maura Tierney) and his son,
Max (Justin Cooper) and under the constant gaze of his feisty boss,
Miranda (Amanda Donohoe). When he lets Max down for the umpteenth
time on his birthday, Max wishes that his father doesn’t lie for 24
hours and it comes true. Fletcher finds himself unable to lie,
a bad thing for a lawyer, especially when his next case is one that
requires a lot of truth-bending- the defence of compulsive adulteress,
Samantha Cole (Jennifer Tilly).
This is a bit of a departure from
Carrey’s previous hits, and it doesn’t necessarily work. Though
his facial antics remain, there isn’t the same odd appeal when he isn’t
flinging himself about like a maniac. At least with roles like
The Truman Show and The Cable Guy, there was enough about the story
and atmosphere to generate a good environment for him to flourish in,
but Liar Liar lacks any of that. It’s a bit of a limp lettuce,
to be truthful.
Carrey’s performance is fine as it
goes, and the support is reasonable enough too, but the whole package
is too weak to deliver any real impact. Some funny moments, undoubtedly,
but then there are funny moments any film- this is a comedy and should
be crammed with them.
All in all, disappointing and
doesn’t stretch anyone involved, least of all the audience. DJY
