las vegas Nicolas Cage is BenSanderson, drunkard, loser, general lowlife- and he loves it. Sacked from his job, he gets a bi pay-off and decides to go to Las Vegas to drink himself to death. There he meets Sera (Elisabeth Shue), prostitute and pimped by Yuri (Julian Sands). They get together, aware of each other's lifestyles, but enjoying each other's company. Until Sera realises that Ben is unswayable from his head-on rush to drink-induced death. I enjoyed this...mostly. It fell away towards the end for me, from what was shaping up to be a cracker. But despite my slight disappointment, it is still a compelling film, with the character of Ben one of the most intense you will find in cinema. Easily the best performance I have ever seen from Nicolas Cage, eclipsing his "Sailor" in Wild at Heart by a nose. His slipping in and out of alcoholic haze is excellently portrayed. Shue is good, too, almost an intense a character, but somewhat in the shade when she shares the screen with Cage. The rest of the cast are, to all intents and purposes, obsolete, as the story rarely wavers from the central two. In short, an intense and at times, electrifying film, with two superb characterisations backed up by tremendous acting. It is disturbing at times, funny at times and tragic at times, but overall makes for gripping entertainment. DJY STORYLINE:
